- Crawdads first baseman Michael Mann (Diablo Valley College) hit a walk off single in the bottom of the ninth inning to lift the team to a 4-3 win over Far West League opponent Menlo Park Legends Tuesday night at Laney College.
The Crawdads entered the bottom of the ninth trailing 3-2. Outfielder Christiaan Durdaler (Samford University) led off by singling to left field. Mark Wangeman successfully sacrificed Durdaller to second which was followed by a line drive single by Jack Colick (Cuesta College) to center field scoring Durdaller and tying the game at 3. With Cole Jarman (University of South Alabama) at bat, a wild pitch advanced Colick to second base. Jarman struck out bringing Mann to the plate. After fouling off a couple pitches, Mann drove the 2-2 offering over the center fielder's head scoring Colick giving the Crawdads the 4-3 win.
Starting pitcher Ben O'Bryan (CSU East Bay) threw 5 solid innings recording 7 strikeouts, surrendering only 1 run on a solo home run in the second inning by Legends' short stop Jeff Keller. J.D. Doran (Butte College) threw 3 shutout innings in relief and Billy Conard (Oxnard College) picked up the win after pitching the ninth.
The defensive play of the game went to pitcher Doran. The Legends threatening in the eighth inning with runners on first and third, Joe Goldenberg attempted a squeeze bunt. Doran bounced off the mound and in one motion fielded the ball bare-handed and tossed it to catcher Nate Rupiper (University of Memphis) who applied the tag.
At the plate Walnut Creek was led by Durdaller who went 2-4, Colick went 1-2 with 2 RBI, Mann went 1-2 with the game-winning RBI and Rupiper also recorded a hit.
The win improves the Crawdads’ record to 4-5 in Far West League play and 11-7 overall. The three game season series concludes tonight at Laney College at 7pm.
